Authors Michael Abrashoff and Doug Krug Will Speak on Grassroots Leadership at Coaches Community of Learning Meeting on Dec. 2
The Federal Consulting Group’s Coaches Community of Learning (COL) will hear from two authors at its quarterly meeting on Friday, December 2.
Members will hear accounts of grassroots leadership as told by Michael Abrashoff, former Navy Commander of the USS Benfold and author of the popular book, “It’s Your Ship,” among others. Abrashoff will be joined by Doug Krug, Senior Consultant with ELSolutions in Denver, Colorado, and himself author of the book, “Enlightened Leadership,” which is now in its 30th printing.
The meeting will be in the amphitheatre in the Office of Thrift Supervision Building at 1700 G St., NW, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The meeting is open to executive coaches, government employees, and invited guests at no charge.
“It’s no secret that Michael Abrashoff turned the hierarchy upside down when he took command of the USS Benfold,” said FCG CEO Anne Kelly. “He asked the crew if there was a better way to do things. Not only did the ship stay afloat when he implemented their innovative ideas, it went on to win the prestigious Spokane Trophy for combat readiness. I urge coaches to use this leadership model with federal executives who may be stuck in a top-down mentality.”
Commander Abrashoff’s awe inspiring account of just how much one man can do when he doesn’t try to do it all himself is testament to how grassroots leadership can bring out the best in a 310-person crew of a powerful Navy destroyer. Doug and Michael will share 10 Grassroots Leadership Principles at the heart of turning around the poorest performing ship in the Pacific Fleet to one that reached the top through unheard-of innovations and techniques that broke with tradition and top-down management.
